A week ago I stumbled across the awesome and his insanely awesome Naruto-based line-art. The moment I saw this one [link] , I knew that I simply HAD to colour it in. It is simply one of the best pieces of fan-art, based on Rock Lee, that I've EVER seen!!

After I had colored most of the image, I realized that the Rock Lee at the top had so much more potential to be awesomely cool, so I thought about making him be in a state where's he's begun opening the gates. (Read the manga or watch the anime if you don't know what the gate thing is all about.) Soon, however, I discovered that it wasn't really working, so I decided to make this piece my own, by creating something that wasn't in the anime or manga (at least to my knowledge..).

- When Gai-sensei is taken prisoner by Akatsuki, Rock Lee pursues them to get his mentor out of harms way. Having caught up to the Akatsuki members, he engages them in battle, but is quickly overwhelmed as his taijutsu has no effect on them. He then resorts to opening the gates. One by one he opens the gates, as he's getting closer and closer to defeat. After having opened the seventh gate and has realized that he will not be able to defeat the Akatsuki with the power he wields, he decides that he'd rather die in the process of defending his mentor than to flee. Lee decides to open the eight gate.

However, just as he starts opening the eight and last gate, something spectacular happens. His eyes start to glow in a pale, multi-coloured light and glowing lines appear on his face. By attempting to open the eight gate, Lee unknowingly activated his own hidden ocular power - which no one, himself included, knew about - and his power and chakra level is increased ten-fold. The ocular power allows Lee to manipulate chakra at his will and create and use any jutsu he can possibly think of. The downside of this power is that it depends on the extra chakra released when opening the gates, and as the opening of the gates severely damages to body of the user if open for too long, so will using the ocular jutsu damage the user - not only by being activated, but also by being used.

Lee uses his newfound power to temporarily freeze the Akatsuki members in place with a powerful genjutsu. He then graps Guy-sensei and teleports the two of them back to the village, where Lee collapses and goes into a two-weeks-long coma, as his body tries to repair itself. He eventually recovers, but vows that he will never use his new-found ability again unless he has no other option. -
